Mochamad Ridwan Kamil was born on October 4, 1971, in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia, to Atje Misbach Muhjiddin, an academic at Padjadjaran University, and Tjutju Sukaesih.
As the second of five children, he grew up in a scholarly and culturally rich household in Bandung, a city known for its vibrant arts and architecture.
Ridwan attended public schools in Bandung: SDN Banjarsari III (1978–1984), SMP Negeri 2 Bandung (1984–1987), and SMA Negeri 3 Bandung (1987–1990).
He pursued a Bachelor of Engineering in Architecture at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), graduating in 1995.

Career
Ridwan Kamil began his architecture career in 2004 by co-founding Urbane Indonesia with Achmad D. Tardiyana, Reza A. Nurtjahja, and Irvan P. Darwis.
Over the following years, the firm designed structures such as Masjid Raya Al-Jabbar in West Java, Masjid Syekh Ajlin in Gaza, Palestine, and Masjid 99 Kubah in Makassar.
He lectured at ITB’s Department of Architecture for 14 years, advocating innovative urban design. After winning the Bandung mayoral election in 2013 as an independent candidate with the support of PKS and Gerindra, he introduced forward-thinking initiatives such as the Bandung Command Centre and Teras Cihampelas, cementing his reputation as a modern urban reformer.
During his term as Governor of West Java (2018–2023), he advanced policies supporting infrastructure, education, and sustainability, including a signature Bus Rapid Transit project.
