Career

Vinesh Phogat’s wrestling career began to gain international recognition in 2013 when she secured her first major senior medal, a bronze, at the Asian Championships in New Delhi in the 51 kg category.

Her breakthrough came in 2014, when she won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, just shy of her 20th birthday, and followed it up with a bronze medal at the Asian Games in Incheon. These early achievements marked her as a rising star in Indian wrestling, laying the foundation for her future success.

In 2016, Phogat faced both challenges and recognition. She made her Olympic debut at the Rio Games in the 48 kg category, but an ACL injury during her quarterfinal match against China’s Sun Yanan forced her to withdraw.

Despite this setback, her talent was acknowledged when she was awarded the prestigious Arjuna Award in the same year. Phogat’s resilience was evident as she bounced back, and in 2018, she defeated Sun Yanan at the Jakarta Asian Games, winning gold and becoming the first Indian woman to achieve this feat at the Games.

She also claimed gold at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast in the 50 kg category, solidifying her dominance in the sport.

Phogat’s career reached new heights with further successes, including bronze medals at the 2019 and 2022 World Championships, making her India’s only female wrestler with more than one world championship medal.

Her crowning achievement came at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she became the first Indian woman to reach an Olympic wrestling final. However, she was disqualified from the gold medal match for being 100 grams over the weight limit, marking a heartbreaking end to her Olympic dream.

In August 2024, at the age of 29, she announced her retirement from wrestling after a decade-long illustrious career. Phogat transitioned to politics, joining the Indian National Congress and winning the 2024 Haryana Assembly elections from the Julana constituency, where she defeated her BJP opponent by over 6,015 votes.

She assumed office as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) on October 8, 2024.
