Aakash Chopra started his Test career in Ahmedabad against New Zealand in late 2003. India needed a new opening partner for Virender Sehwag, who played for Delhi. In the second Test in Mohali during the 2003-2004 season, Chopra scored two half-centuries against New Zealand. On the tour to Australia in 2003-2004, he often opened the batting with Sehwag.

They formed two strong opening partnerships that resulted in centuries in Melbourne and Sydney. As an opening batsman, Chopra helped India score big runs in that series. His performance was impressive, and he outscored famous middle-order batsmen like Rahul Dravid, V. V. S. Laxman, Sachin Tendulkar, and Sourav Ganguly, who were known for their centuries.

In September 2008, Aakash Chopra played for Delhi in the Nissar Trophy. They faced SNGPL, the winners of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy from Pakistan.
