Early Life and education

Bronte Campbell is now at the age of 31. She was born on 14 May 1994 in Blantyre, Malawi and moved with her family to Australia in 2001 when she was about seven years old.

Her father Eric worked as an accountant and her mother Jenny was a nurse who had been a synchronised swimmer and taught her four daughters to swim.

She is the second of five children and grew up with an older sister Cate, two younger sisters—Jessica and Abigail—and a younger brother Hamish, who has severe cerebral palsy and requires constant care. Bronte shares her birthday with Hamish.

The family settled in Brisbane, where Bronte and Cate joined the Indooroopilly Swimming Club under coach Simon Cusack.

She later completed a Business Degree at Queensland University of Technology, majoring in Public Relations.

Bronte Campbell’s international career began in earnest with a gold medal in the 50 m freestyle at the 2009 Australian Youth Olympic Festival.

In 2011 she won the 50 m freestyle at the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Lima, Peru.

She made her Olympic debut at the 2012 London Games in the 50 m freestyle, becoming, with her sister Cate, one of the first Australian sisters to compete in the same Olympic swimming event.

At the 2013 World Aquatics Championships, she earned silver in the 4×100 m freestyle relay.

Her breakthrough came at the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, where she claimed gold in the 50 m and 100 m freestyle as well as in the 4×100 m freestyle relay, and bronze in the medley relay.

At the 2016 Rio Olympics, she earned gold in the 4×100 m freestyle relay in a world-record performance.

In 2018 at the Commonwealth Games she won gold in the 100 m freestyle and both the 4×100 m freestyle and medley relays, plus silver in the 50 m freestyle.

At the Tokyo Games in 2021, she won gold in the women’s 4×100 m freestyle relay and bronze in the mixed medley relay.

After an 18-month break, she returned to qualify for her fourth Olympics and at Paris 2024 she won another gold as part of the 4×100 m freestyle relay, becoming one of only five Australian swimmers to compete in four Olympic Games.
