Cameron studied at Griffith University, where he pursued undergraduate study in physics and related sciences (Bachelor of Science honours-level study).
At Griffith University, he studied both Mathematics and Physics, earning the nickname “The Professor” for his scientific approach to swimming.
During high school, he performed academically among the top of his state.
He also pursued research through a summer fellowship at Griffith University’s Centre of Quantum Dynamics, studying nanodiamonds under physicist Erik Streed.

Career
Cameron McEvoy broke onto the international scene at the 2011 Junior World Championships with gold in both the 50m and 100m freestyle, along with bronze in the 200m freestyle.
At just 17, he joined the Australian Olympic team for London 2012, contributing to relay teams that finished fourth and fifth in the 4×100m and 4×200m freestyle relays, respectively.
He continued making waves by winning bronze medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics in both the 4×100m freestyle and 4×100m medley relays, his individual 100m freestyle placing seventh in the final.
In Tokyo 2020, he added another bronze in the 4×100m freestyle relay.
At the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships, he won gold in the 100m freestyle (47.82 seconds, Games record), gold in the 4×100m freestyle relay, and bronze in the 200m freestyle and 4×200m freestyle relay.
At the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, he claimed silver in the 100m freestyle and mixed medley relay, along with a bronze in the 4×200m freestyle relay.
Following Tokyo, McEvoy took an extended break from swimming before returning with a radically redesigned training program—dramatically reducing pool mileage to roughly 2–3 km per week, adding strength disciplines like rock climbing and weightlifting, and significantly increasing muscle mass. His approach paid off spectacularly.
In 2023 he won the world title in the men’s 50m freestyle (Fukuoka) in 21.06 — a time widely reported as an Australian championship/national record and the performance that relaunched his sprinting career.
He qualified for and raced at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and won gold in the men’s 50m freestyle (time reported as 21.25 at the Olympic final).
He became the first Australian man to win Olympic gold in that individual event.
