John Joseph Armstrong was born on January 3, 1963, in Brooklyn, New York. He is the son of Irish immigrants and was raised Catholic by his mother Mary after his father passed away when Jack was seven years old.

He grew up with three brothers: William, James, and Brendan. He earned a Bachelor’s in History (1985) and a Master’s in Public Communications (1988) from Fordham University, where he also served as a graduate assistant coach.
