Kristina Šmigun-Vähi was born on 23 February 1977 in Tartu, Estonia. Her father, Anatoli Šmigun, was a former Soviet cross-country skier and later her lifelong coach, while her mother, Rutt Rehemaa, was also a competitive skier and the 1974 Soviet junior champion.
She grew up skiing with her younger sister Katrin and began serious training at an early age under her father’s guidance. Šmigun-Vähi attended Tartu Hansa School and later studied at the University of Tartu, graduating with a degree in physical education and coaching. She is of Estonian ethnicity and has identified as culturally Lutheran, though not actively religious.
Career
Kristina Šmigun-Vähi made her World Cup debut in 1993 at age 16 and claimed her first podium the following year. She dominated distance events in the early 2000s, winning the overall World Cup distance title three times (2000, 2002, 2003) and collecting 16 individual World Cup victories.
Her defining moment came at the 2006 Turin Olympics, where she won gold in both the 7.5 km + 7.5 km double pursuit and the 10 km classical, becoming the first Estonian woman to win Winter Olympic gold.
She added a silver medal in the 10 km freestyle at the 2010 Vancouver Games, bringing her Olympic medal count to three.
Throughout her career she earned seven World Championship medals (two silver, five bronze) between 1999 and 2009, and was flag-bearer for Estonia at the 2002 and 2010 Winter Olympics.
