He attended Xavier High School in his hometown, where he excelled on the mound and was rated among the nation’s top high school pitchers.

Career
After signing for a $1 million bonus in June 2014, Keller progressed steadily through the Pirates’ farm system.
He debuted professionally with the Gulf Coast League Pirates in 2014 and advanced to Triple-A Indianapolis by mid-2018, where he was named International League Pitcher of the Year following a 3.56 ERA over the season.
Promoted to the majors on May 27, 2019, he allowed six earned runs in his debut but secured a rotation spot by August.
In 2021, a midseason demotion to Triple-A helped him refine his command; upon returning, he closed out the campaign with improved performances.
The 2022 season saw Keller perfect a new sinker, yielding a 3.91 ERA and logging 138 strikeouts over 159 innings, including surrendering Albert Pujols’s 703rd and final career home run on October 4, 2022.
Keller’s breakout came in 2023: he was named Opening Day starter, tossed his first complete-game shutout on May 9, and earned National League Player of the Week honors before being selected to his first All-Star Game on July 2, 2023.
He finished with a 13–9 record, a 4.21 ERA, and a career-high 210 strikeouts.
