Early Life and Education

Rasmus Mägi was born on 4 May 1992 in Tartu, Estonia. Both parents were active in sports: his father Taivo was a decathlete and coach, while his mother Anne competed in sprinting.

He started athletics at age ten at Tartu Kalev club and was coached from the beginning by his father. Mägi attended the prestigious Miina Härma Gümnaasium in Tartu and later enrolled at the University of Tartu, where he graduated with a degree in physical education in 2016. He is of Estonian ethnicity and has described himself as non-religious.

Career

Rasmus Mägi burst onto the international scene in 2012 when, at only 20, he reached the Olympic semi-final in London and broke the 50-second barrier.

Two years later he stunned Europe by winning silver at the 2014 Zürich European Championships in a national record 48.54, becoming the first Estonian male track medallist at a major outdoor championship since 1934.

He repeated silver-medalled again in 2022 in Munich (48.97) and has collected bronze and gold at European Team Championships and European Games.

Mägi has competed at every major global event since 2013, reaching the World Championship final in 2015, 2019 and 2022 (best ranking 5th in 2019) and has been a Diamond League finalist seven times.

His personal best of 47.82, set in Tokyo during the 2021 Olympic semi-final, ranks him in the all-time top 30 worldwide. He is a 13-time Estonian champion and has remained remarkably injury-free throughout his career.

Rasmus Mägi continues to train full-time in Tartu under his father Taivo and Polish technique coach Andrzej Wołkowycki. He regularly finishes top-8 at global championships and remains Estonia’s best hope for an Olympic track medal in Paris 2024 and beyond.
