He attended Hale School in Perth, where his cycling talent developed rapidly.

Instead of pursuing university studies, Welsford joined the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) to train full-time in cycling.

There, he was mentored by top Australian coaches and became part of Cycling Australia’s national development pathway.

He rose through the junior ranks, winning back-to-back under-19 world titles in the team pursuit (2013, 2014) — achievements that set the foundation for his elite career.

Personal Life

He competed at Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games (held in 2021), contributing to a bronze medal in team pursuit for Australia.

Welsford made a more dedicated shift into road racing starting 2022, signing with Team DSM.

In his first full road seasons, he scored his first professional road win on a stage at the Tour of Turkey.
