Early Life and Education

Ragnar Klavan was born on 30 October 1985 in Viljandi, Estonia, into a football family. His father, Dzintar Klavan, played professionally in the Soviet leagues and later coached, while his mother, Tiina, supported the household.

Ragnar started kicking a ball almost before he could walk and joined the local Tulevik Viljandi academy at age seven. He completed secondary school in Viljandi and briefly studied business administration at university level, but chose to focus fully on football from his late teens. He is of Estonian ethnicity with distant Latvian roots through his father.

Career

Ragnar Klavan began his senior career with FC Elva and Tulevik Viljandi before moving to Flora Tallinn in 2003, where he won two Meistriliiga titles. In 2005, at age 19, he transferred to Dutch club Heracles Almelo and quickly established himself in the Eredivisie.

After one season he joined AZ Alkmaar (2009–2012), winning the Dutch Super Cup and regularly playing in Europe. In 2012 he moved to German Bundesliga side FC Augsburg, where he spent four solid years and became a fan favourite.

The pinnacle came on 20 July 2016 when Liverpool FC signed him for £4.2 million, making him the first Estonian in Premier League history. He made 53 appearances for the Reds, including the 2018 Champions League final squad, and scored his only Liverpool goal against Burnley.

In August 2018 he joined Cagliari in Serie A, spending two seasons in Italy before returning home to JK Tallinna Kalev in 2022 for a farewell spell. He retired as a player in June 2024 with 130 caps (3 goals) for Estonia, a record only recently approached by Konstantin Vassiljev.

Ragnar Klavan now works as a television pundit for Viaplay in the Nordic-Baltic region, holds a UEFA Pro coaching licence and serves as assistant coach for Estonia’s U-21 national team. He has expressed interest in one day managing the senior national side.
