He worked various jobs while selling drugs on the side. Following several brief jail stints, he pursued rap full-time in the mid-1990s to leave the streets. He is of mixed white and Mexican ethnicity, and his religious background is unknown.
Career
SPM founded Dope House Records in 1995 with his brother Arthur and childhood friend Juan Carlos. His independent debut Power Moves (1998) sold over 100,000 copies through mom-and-pop stores and car trunks alone.
Follow-up albums Never Change (2001) and The Purity Album (2000) went gold and platinum independently, while tracks like High So High, Hillwood Hustlaz, and Screens Falling became Texas anthems.
At his peak he moved over 1 million albums without major-label support and signed artists like Baby Bash and Lucky Luciano.
In May 2002, just weeks before the release of his planned Universal Records debut, Coy was convicted of aggravated sexual assault of a child and sentenced to 45 years in prison (eligible for parole in 2024).
Since his incarceration, Dope House has continued releasing archival and new material recorded before his arrest, including The Last Chair Violinist (2008) and several mixtapes. His music still streams heavily on Spotify and YouTube, especially in Texas and the Southwest.
SPM’s influence on Southern and Chicano rap remains undeniable. His melodic flow and bilingual storytelling inspired a generation of Texas artists, and his independent blueprint through Dope House Records is studied by many underground rappers today.
