Basketball Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett found himself in the headlines this week following a domestic dispute with his girlfriend, Teare Candelier, at their Los Angeles-area residence.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of April 27, 2025, prompted a 911 call and a police response, though both parties have since downplayed the situation, expressing regret for involving law enforcement.

According to law enforcement sources cited by TMZ Sports, Candelier dialed 911 just before 2:00 AM on April 27 to report a heated verbal altercation with Garnett. By the time officers arrived at the couple’s home, Garnett, a former NBA MVP and 15-time All-Star, had already left the premises in an effort to de-escalate the situation. Police took a report and offered medical assistance to Candelier, which she declined, indicating that the dispute remained non-physical.
Sources familiar with the incident clarified that the argument never escalated to violence. As Garnett attempted to leave the residence to diffuse the conflict, he reportedly moved Candelier out of a doorway. This action was described as the only physical contact during the disagreement, with both sides emphasizing that the situation did not turn violent.
In a joint statement released on Sunday, May 4, Garnett and Candelier expressed regret over the incident and the subsequent involvement of authorities. “We deeply regret that a personal disagreement escalated and inappropriately involved authorities,” the couple stated. “It was never our intention to involve others in a moment that should have remained private. Like most couples, we have disagreements, but our commitment to each other remains strong, and we move forward with renewed respect, understanding, and love.”
The incident has drawn attention to Garnett, who has largely maintained a low profile since retiring from the NBA in 2016 after a 21-year career. Known for his intensity on the court, Garnett won an NBA championship with the Boston Celtics in 2008, earned the 2004 NBA MVP award, and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020. Since retiring, he has transitioned into media, hosting the podcast KG: Certified with former teammate Paul Pierce, and has taken on acting roles, including a standout performance in the 2019 film Uncut Gems.
Little is known about the duration of Garnett and Candelier’s relationship, as the couple has kept their personal lives private. However, public appearances together, including at the 2023 US Open and the 2025 NBA All-Star Saturday Night, suggest a longstanding partnership. Garnett was previously married to Brandi Padilla, with whom he shares two daughters, Kapri Garnett (Capri Garnett) and Kavalli Garnett. Kapri, a 6-foot-3 volleyball star, recently committed to the University of Michigan. Garnett also has a daughter, Naya Garnett, from a previous relationship with Necat Akman, which involved a legal custody battle.
No arrests were made, and no further legal action is expected at this time. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was contacted for confirmation but has not publicly commented on the incident. Representatives for Garnett and Candelier also did not respond to requests for additional comment.
