President Tinubu Nominates Renowned Tax Expert Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance
Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Taiwo Oyedele, an economist and tax policy specialist who has been at the center of the administration’s fiscal reform drive, to serve as minister of state for finance, according to a letter transmitted to the Senate on Tuesday as part of a modest reshuffling of the government’s economic team.
Mr. Oyedele, 50, would replace Doris Uzoka-Anite, who has been reassigned as minister of state for budget and national planning. The position makes Mr. Oyedele the deputy to the finance minister, Wale Edun, assisting in the oversight of fiscal operations, while broader policy direction remains with the senior minister, who represents the ministry at meetings of the Federal Executive Council and supervises matters, including the national budget and macroeconomic strategy.

In a statement released by the presidency, Mr. Tinubu praised Mr. Oyedele’s stewardship of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, which was created in 2023 to streamline Nigeria’s complex tax regime and bolster revenue collection. “Taiwo has served our nation diligently,” the president said, citing his “clarity, courage, and competence” in advancing changes to tax administration and fiscal governance.
Mr. Oyedele’s nomination comes at a delicate moment for Africa’s largest economy, where the government is seeking to widen its tax base, improve compliance, and reassure investors amid persistent inflation and currency volatility. Supporters of the nomination have described it as an effort to embed technocratic expertise more firmly within the cabinet, while critics have questioned how the reshuffle will alter internal dynamics within the economic team.
Born on June 18, 1975, in Ondo State, Mr. Oyedele grew up in Ikaram, Akoko, in modest circumstances that he has often cited as formative. His father, a retired school headmaster, emphasized discipline and education, values that Mr. Oyedele has said shaped his commitment to policy reforms aimed at broadening opportunity.
He began his studies at Yaba College of Technology, earning a Higher National Diploma in accountancy and finance, and later obtained a bachelor’s degree in applied accounting from Oxford Brookes University. He completed executive programs at the London School of Economics, Yale University, the Gordon Institute of Business Science, and Harvard Kennedy School. A chartered accountant, he has received professional distinctions, including an outstanding career award from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.
Mr. Oyedele joined PwC Nigeria in 2001 during his national service year and remained for more than two decades, rising to become fiscal policy partner and Africa tax leader. In those roles, he advised corporations and governments on tax strategy and regulatory reform across the continent.
In July 2023, shortly after Mr. Tinubu took office, Mr. Oyedele was appointed chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms. The panel proposed measures intended to harmonize levies, reduce duplication among federal and state authorities, and improve the efficiency of revenue administration — initiatives the government has described as essential to long-term growth.
Outside government, Mr. Oyedele serves as a professor of practice at Babcock University and has lectured at the Lagos Business School. He founded the Impact Africa Foundation in 2015, a nonprofit focused on education and youth development.
The Senate is expected to consider the nomination in the coming days. If confirmed, Mr. Oyedele would assume his new post amid continued debate over how best to stabilize public finances and sustain economic reforms in a country where fiscal policy remains both urgent and politically fraught.
