Stephen Fry Fails to Live Up to His Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Brilliance in the Traitors
When it was announced that Stephen Fry was going to star in Celebrity Traitors UK, there was a lot of buzz around the series.
The iconic intellectual is one of the UK’s national treasures and seemed the ideal fit for a skilled traitor or a highly perceptive faithful.

Earlier in the year, Fry had incredible success on the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Celebrity Special, but was unable to carry this over to the BBC’s intriguing series set in a Scottish country manor. Beware of spoilers for the Celebrity Traitors UK if you haven’t seen it yet.
Fry Was One of the Greatest Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Contestants Ever
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire is one of the best-known quiz shows of all time, and the main series has spilled out into countless other formats.
Along with different international versions, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Roulette can be found among a selection of live roulette games. That highlights just how big the franchise has become, which is why it’s able to attract some of the world’s most beloved stars when it has its celebrity editions.
Fry was ideally suited to the quiz show and took it as an opportunity to display his incredible intellect. He broke a record for the celebrity format of the show, banking £250,000 for charity. He was close to doubling this but decided to play it safe when he was unsure over the £500,000 question.
After his performance on that show, there was a lot of excitement to see how a man of his talents would fare on the Traitors.
Appearance in The Celebrity Traitors Was Relatively Disappointing
The first edition of the Celebrity Traitors UK attracted a few high-profile celebrities, with Fry arguably the biggest name on the roster. The 68-year-old is known for being a fan of the series, and was keen to experience it in person.
When asked by Claudia Winkleman whether he wanted to be Traitor or a Faithful, he opted for the latter. However, his intellect didn’t make him a great Traitor hunter, and he continuously got things wrong at the Round Table.
Ultimately, the other contestants voted to eliminate Fry in Episode 6, meaning that he came 10th out of the 19 celebrities. Some commentators predicted that Fry wouldn’t last long, as The Traitors isn’t a format that rewards intellectualism. There was also the fact that the others expected a big name to be one of the traitors, so it naturally led them to suspect Fry.
The Celebrity Traitors UK was a significant success, regardless, however, with Alan Carr stealing the limelight as one of the best traitors ever. He was barely suspected by his fellow contestants and managed to fly under the radar all the way until the final.
The series will most certainly be back again next year, and it’s likely to attract many more high-profile celebrities. Fry‘s appearance won’t go down in history, but the season as a whole will.
