The black market exchange rate for the US Dollar (USD) to Nigerian Naira (NGN), commonly referred to as the “Aboki” rate, continues to be a focal point for Nigerians navigating the country’s economic landscape.

As of today, July 1, 2025, the parallel market exchange rate for the dollar to naira is reported at approximately ₦1,575 for buying and ₦1,585 for selling, according to sources from Bureau De Change (BDC) operators in major cities like Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Port Harcourt.

The black market, also known as the parallel market, operates outside the Central Bank of Nigeria‘s (CBN) official channels and is driven by supply and demand dynamics, often reflecting economic pressures not captured by official rates.

The CBN does not recognize the parallel market and advises individuals to engage in foreign exchange transactions through licensed banks. However, the black market remains a critical source of foreign currency for many Nigerians due to limited access to dollars through official channels and high demand for imports, travel, and international payments.

Recent data from online platforms and street traders indicate slight fluctuations in the black market rates. Other sources, such as NgnRates.com, noted rates between ₦1,570 and ₦1,580 for June 30, 2025, suggesting a marginal increase today.

Economic analysts attribute the persistent gap between official and black market rates to Nigeria’s reliance on imports, limited foreign exchange reserves, and ongoing currency scarcity. The Naira’s value has faced significant pressure in recent years, with some projections suggesting it could approach ₦2,000/$1 soon if current economic trends continue.

For Nigerians, the black market rate has a direct impact on the cost of imported goods, international education, and travel expenses.

As the economic landscape evolves, Nigerians are encouraged to compare rates from multiple sources and consider official channels for safer transactions.
