As Nigerians dive deeper into the festive “Detty December” season, the parallel market – popularly known as the “Aboki” or black market – continues to show remarkable stability in the US Dollar to Nigerian Naira exchange rate on Sunday, 21st December 2025.

Bureau de Change (BDC) operators and street traders in major cities including Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano report that the US Dollar is trading at a selling rate of ₦1,496 per USD. Buying rates are hovering around ₦1,480–₦1,485, reflecting a narrow spread amid balanced demand and supply.

This rate remains unchanged from the previous day (20th December), where the selling price was also quoted at ₦1,496 across key markets. Traders attribute the steadiness to moderated festive-season dollar demand from importers and travelers, coupled with slight improvements in forex inflows from remittances and diaspora sources ahead of Christmas.

For context, exchanging $1,000 on the black market today would yield approximately ₦1,480,000–₦1,496,000, depending on the direction of the transaction – a critical figure for small businesses, families receiving overseas support, and individuals planning holiday expenses.

In comparison, the official Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) rate stands significantly lower, around ₦1,450–₦1,460 per Dollar in the Investors & Exporters window, highlighting the persistent premium in the informal sector driven by accessibility and liquidity preferences.

Market observers note that while the Naira has held firm in recent weeks, any surge in end-of-year demand could push rates higher. Platforms tracking real-time Aboki rates recommend verifying with local dealers, as minor variations can occur by location or time of day.

Stay updated, as parallel market rates can fluctuate rapidly. For the most accurate conversions, consult trusted sources or local BDC operators.
