Mark Andrew Brayshaw was born on 5 February 1966 in Western Australia. He is the son of Ian Brayshaw, a former Claremont premiership player and state cricketer, and Debra (Deb) Brayshaw.

His brother, James Brayshaw, is a former state cricketer, past chairman of North Melbourne Football Club, and a prominent sports media personality.

Mark was educated at Scotch College and North Beach before beginning his football career. He is of Australian ethnicity, though his religious beliefs have not been publicly disclosed.

Career

Mark Brayshaw began his Australian rules football career at Claremont Football Club in the WAFL, debuting in 1984. Although challenges and doubts marked his early years, the arrival of coach Gerard Neesham in 1987 sparked a transformation in Brayshaw’s career.

He became a versatile and dependable player, significantly contributing to Claremont’s success in the late 1980s. Despite a serious knee injury in 1987, which kept him sidelined for eight weeks, Brayshaw returned to play a pivotal role in Claremont’s 1989 premiership victory, where he kicked five goals in the grand final.

His impressive performances earned him second place in the Sandover Medal and selection for a state representative team, although no game was played that year. In the 1989 VFL Draft, Brayshaw was selected by North Melbourne with the sixth overall pick.

He played 32 games and kicked two goals for North Melbourne from 1990 to 1992, and considered his time at the club a positive experience despite being delisted at the end of 1992.  

Following his AFL career, Brayshaw returned to Claremont in 1994, where he played 20 more games and served as club captain. He capped off his playing career with 110 games and 70 goals across two stints.
