Career
In 1998, Musiq signed with Def Soul Records. This label is part of Universal Music’s Def Jam Recordings, which focuses on R&B music. His first album, Aijuswanaseing, came out in 2000. It is pronounced “I Just Wanna Sing.” This album was a big success.
It was produced mainly by Ivan “Orthodox” Barias and Carvin “Ransum” Haggins. Aijuswanaseing went platinum and included popular songs like “Just Friends (Sunny)” and “Love.” The song “Love” stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 for 22 weeks. Because of this success, Musiq became known as a pioneer of neo-soul music. However, he felt more connected to hip-hop soul and was influenced by groups like The Roots.
His second album, Juslisen, was released in 2002. It debuted at number one on both the Billboard 200 and the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. Juslisen also earned platinum certification. The singles “Halfcrazy” and “Dontchange” became fan favorites.
“Halfcrazy” peaked at #16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #2 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. “Dontchange” reached #17 on the Hot 100 and #3 on the R&B chart. These hits solidified his success as an artist. In 2003, Musiq released another album called Soulstar, which went gold. It included singles like “Forthenight” and “Whoknows.” After Soulstar, Musiq left Def Soul.
Musiq Soulchild signed with Atlantic Records. He released his album Luvanmusiq in March 2007. The album was a big hit. It reached number one on the Billboard 200 and R&B charts. It sold 149,000 copies in its first week and earned a gold certification. Popular singles from the album included “B.U.D.D.Y.” and “Teachme,” both reaching number two on the R&B chart.
His songs showed off his unique soulful sound. He also contributed to soundtracks for Tyler Perry films. These included Daddy’s Little Girls and Why Did I Get Married? He even remade the song “People Everyday” with Estelle for the film Meet the Browns.
In December 2008, Musiq released OnMyRadio. This album had a different sound. The lead single “Radio” had a pop feel, unlike his usual neo-soul style. The album hit number one on the R&B chart and number eleven on the Billboard 200. It included top ten R&B singles like “IfULeave,” featuring Mary J. Blige, and “SoBeautiful,” produced by JR Hutson.
His last album with Atlantic, MusiqInTheMagiq, came out in 2011. It reached number three on the R&B chart and featured singles like “Anything” with Swizz Beatz and “Yes.” During this time, Musiq changed his management to Victor Grieg and also tried acting. He appeared as himself in shows like Half and Half and The Game.
In September 2013, Musiq left Atlantic Records. He wanted to be an independent artist. He signed with My Block Records, which is run by Warryn Campbell. They had worked together before. That same year, he released an album called 9ine. It was a reggae-inspired duet album with Syleena Johnson. They recorded it in just nine days for Shanachie Records.
In 2014, Musiq released an EP called The Husel. He used the persona “The Husel” for this project. It mixed hip-hop and auto-tuned sounds. Some people liked it, but others thought it was a mistake. This change slowed down his career a bit.
Musiq went back to his roots with Life on Earth in 2016. This was his first independent solo album through My Block/E1 Music. It featured the single “I Do.” In 2017, he joined eOne/SoulStar Music Company. He released an album called Feel the Real, which included the singles “Simple Things” and “Start Over.” This album reached #11 on the Independent Albums chart.
In 2020, Musiq released dewitt4dilla. It was a five-track EP that honored soul legends like Donny Hathaway and Marvin Gaye. He used J Dilla‘s hip-hop beats for this project. This release reaffirmed his identity in hip-hop soul.
