Manuel L. Quezon was a leader from the Philippines. He was born on August 19, 1878, in Baler. His parents were María Dolores Molina and Lucio Quezón. He had two brothers, Teodorico Molina and Pedro Quezón.

Quezon studied at San Juan de Letran and then went to the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. He loved being Filipino. He worked hard to help the Philippines gain independence from American control.

Career

Manuel L. Quezon was elected in 1907 to represent the 1st district of Tayabas. He served in the first Philippine Assembly, which later became the House of Representatives. During this time, he was the majority floor leader.

He also chaired the committees on rules and appropriations. In 1914, Quezon spoke to the U.S. House of Representatives about the Jones Bill. He shared that he got most of his early education at a village school. This school was set up by the Spanish government as part of the free public education system in the Philippines.

In 1921, Manuel L. Quezon launched a public campaign against House Speaker Sergio Osmeña. He accused Osmeña of being an autocratic leader. Quezon also blamed him for the financial problems at the Philippine National Bank. This led to debates between Quezon and Osmeña that lasted until 1922. Because of this conflict, the Nationalista Party split into two groups. In January of that year, Quezon resigned as Senate President.
