Shahid Rafiq Khan was born on July 18, 1950, in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan, into a middle-class family. His father worked in the construction industry, and his mother was a mathematics professor.

He had a brother named Tariq, who has since passed away. In 1967, at age 16, Khan moved to the United States to pursue higher education at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. He is of Pakistani ethnicity, though his religious affiliation is not publicly known.

Career

Shahid Khan began his professional journey working at Flex-N-Gate, an automotive parts manufacturer, during his university years. In 1978, he founded Bumper Works, a company specializing in car bumpers for customized pickup trucks.

Two years later, he acquired Flex-N-Gate from his former employer and merged it with Bumper Works. Under his leadership, Flex-N-Gate became a major supplier for the automotive industry, notably the sole supplier of bumpers for Toyota in the U.S. by 1989.

In 2012, Khan expanded into sports by purchasing the Jacksonville Jaguars of the NFL for approximately $770 million. He became the first member of an ethnic minority to own an NFL team. The Jaguars’ valuation has increased significantly, reflecting Khan’s effective management and investment strategies.
