Early Life And Education

Abu Bakar Ba’asyir was born on 17 August 1938 in Jombang, East Java, Indonesia, to parents Halimah and Abud.

He has several siblings, including Ahmad Ba’asyir, Salim Ba’asyir, Seha Ba’asyir, Aisyah Ba’asyir, and Fatmah Ba’asyir.

From 1959 to 1963, he studied at a modernist Islamic boarding school (pesantren) and later graduated from Al-Irsyad University in Central Java.

Of Hadhrami Arab and Javanese descent, Ba’asyir is a practicing Muslim.

Career

Abu Bakar Ba’asyir began his career as an Islamic cleric by co-founding the Al-Mukmin Islamic boarding school in Ngruki, Central Java, in 1972 with Abdullah Sungkar.

While initially established as an institution for Islamic education, the school later became associated with the recruitment of militants for Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), a group with known ties to al-Qaeda.
