The Nigerian music industry mourns the loss of iconic highlife musician Mike Ejeagha, who passed away peacefully at the age of 95.

Ejeagha, fondly known as “Gentleman Mike,” was celebrated for his timeless hit “Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo,” a song that became a cultural phenomenon and inspired a viral dance challenge in 2024.

Born in 1930 in Enugu State, Ejeagha was a pioneer of the highlife genre, blending Igbo folk music with storytelling that captivated generations. His 1983 classic “Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo,” from the album Akuko N’Egwu Vol. 1, gained renewed fame when comedian Brain Jotter used it for a viral TikTok dance, introducing the song to a global audience.

The track, narrating a folktale about a tortoise and an elephant, showcased Ejeagha’s unique ability to weave moral lessons into music.

Ejeagha’s career spanned over six decades, with hits like “Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche” cementing his legacy as a master storyteller and musician. His music, rooted in Igbo culture, resonated with audiences for its authenticity and lyrical depth. In 2024, following the viral resurgence of his song, Ejeagha received widespread recognition, including a donation of N2 million from Brain Jotter and visits from notable figures like singer Flavour.

Tributes have poured in from fans, artists, and dignitaries. “Mike Ejeagha was a national treasure whose music bridged generations,” said a spokesperson for the Enugu State government. Social media platforms are flooded with messages honouring his contributions to Nigerian music and culture.
