Jay Onrait was born August 29, 1974, in Calgary and raised in Boyle and Athabasca, Alberta. Born to his parents whose names are unknown but can be referred to as Mr. and Mrs. Onrait, his father, worked as a pharmacist, and Jay helped out at the family pharmacy during his youth.

Jay Onrait began his career in sports broadcasting at TSN in 1996 as an editorial assistant while studying at Ryerson.
