Nik Rabinowitz was born on 3 October 1976 in Constantia, Cape Town, and was raised on a farm called Eagles Nest by his mother, Jennifer, an interior designer, and his father, Hym, a potter.

Raised in a secular Jewish household, he attended a Waldorf school before moving on to Grove Primary and then matriculating from Westerford High School.

He graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1999 with a Bachelor of Business Science with Honours in Organizational Psychology. Growing up alongside isiXhosa-speaking farm workers, he became fluent in isiXhosa, an ability that would later define much of his comedic style.

Nik married Debbie Rabinowitz, a medical doctor and transformational coach, in 2009. Nik began performing professionally in the early 2000s after touring Southern Africa with a theatre company and a group of donkeys.
