Early Life & Education

Kellen Beatrice Kanze Dena, a member of the Mijikenda community, was born in 1980 to Duruma parents and raised in Nairobi and Kwale. Due to her parents’ roots, she is part of the Daruma tribe, one of the nine distinct tribes of the Mijikenda group. She has a gorgeous sister named Elsie Hemsi Stephens and a brother named Frank Meliso.

She attended Kianjokoma Primary School (now St. Matthews Mixed Boarding Primary School) before proceeding to Kieni Girls High School for her secondary education (O-Levels), where she graduated in 1997. Eventually, she enrolled in the Foundation College of Professional Studies to study journalism and mass communication. She attempted to enrol at Kenya’s Top Medical Training Institution (KMTC) but was unsuccessful.

Kanze Dena had a strained relationship with her mother, Mrs. Zainabu Kiwasi, and kept her pregnancy a secret. However, Mrs. Zainabu Kiwasi learned about the pregnancy a day after delivery and offered to look after her daughter, Natasha Dena, allowing Kanze Dena to focus on her studies. Sadly, Mrs. Zainabu Kiwasi passed away from colon cancer, which was discovered when she fell ill and was sent for professional care.

Career

Kanze Dena‘s media journey began with an internship at Kenyan Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) radio, where she worked as a Swahili newsreader. Her outstanding performance during the internship earned her a position as a news anchor at KBC TV, where she worked for six years before moving on to Citizen TV.

While working as a director and newscaster, Kanze Dena co-hosted Nipashe Wikendi with Lulu Hassan for almost six years at Citizen TV. Her reputation as an exceptional newscaster grew, and she eventually landed the role of PSCU’s deputy head and State House’s deputy spokesperson.

Today, Kanze Dena serves as the spokesman for the President’s Executive Office, and she oversees the Strategic Communication Unit for the President (PSU). Her communication skills and ability to remain calm under pressure have played a crucial role in her successful career. Personal Life

Natasha Dena, the firstborn of Kanze Dena, met a tragic fate, which the latter disclosed during an interview with Maisha Magic’s Story Yangu segment. She revealed that she fell pregnant while working as a waitress, and her ex-boyfriend left her high and dry upon learning the news. To make matters worse, she kept her pregnancy a secret from her mother, who only found out after the baby was born.

Initially, she contemplated putting her baby up for adoption, but her mother convinced her otherwise. Nonetheless, the infant had to be taken to Mombasa to stay with her grandmother. Kanze Dena continued her studies in Nairobi, where she faced rumours about her pregnancy, which quickly spread like wildfire. In time, the speculations proved accurate, and she gave birth to her son, Nathaniel Amani.

On March 2nd, 2019, Kanze Dena tied the knot in a private ceremony at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Laikipia County. Her spouse, Nick Mararo, who happens to be the CEO of Nuvision Media, was by her side. The lovely bride donned a flowing cream gown, while the groom looked sharp in a grey suit. They exchanged their vows around 1:00 PM, surrounded by their loved ones. Their marriage is blessed with two children, Joe Mararo and Nathaniel Amani.
