She was reported missing and found later that day, partially submerged in Erina Creek at about 3 p.m. Her death was initially classified as accidental drowning, but bruises, scratches, and signs of physical altercation prompted further investigation.  

Six weeks later, police arrested 53-year-old Adrian Noel Torrens—who had a two-year AVO against him and was found on CCTV following Audrey—for her murder. Evidence suggested a physical assault leading to drowning. Torrens died by suicide in custody on April 24, 2025, before trial, complicating legal closure.  

Controversy

The investigation drew strong criticism due to the initial mischaracterization of Audrey‘s death, the delayed homicide investigation, and overlooked CCTV and phone-location leads. Torrens had a significant history of domestic violence and repeated AVO breaches, yet remained free.

His actions, threats, AVO violations, and violent past sparked widespread calls for police reform and stronger protections for women. Additionally, his death by suicide in custody prompted public outcry and demands for accountability.
