He graduated high school and briefly enrolled in a computer program while working as a bike messenger. His ethnicity is Belizean with Jewish maternal ancestry, and he embraced Orthodox Judaism.

Career

Shyne began his career in 1997 after being discovered freestyling in a Brooklyn barbershop, signing a million-dollar deal with Bad Boy Records under Sean “Diddy” Combs. His debut album, Shyne (2000), went platinum, driven by hits like “Bad Boyz” featuring Barrington Levy, which peaked at number 57 on the Billboard Hot 100. His gritty lyrics reflected his Brooklyn upbringing and Belizean roots.

A 1999 nightclub shooting involving Combs led to Shyne’s conviction for assault and gun possession, resulting in a 10-year sentence. While incarcerated, he contributed to albums by The Notorious B.I.G., Mase, and Lil Wayne, maintaining his musical presence.

In 2004, Shyne released his second album, Godfather Buried Alive, recorded partly over a jail phone, which debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and sold 434,000 copies. After his 2009 release and deportation to Belize, he signed another seven-figure deal with Def Jam in 2010 and released the Gangland mixtape in 2012, which was less successful.

Appointed Belize’s Music and Goodwill Ambassador in 2010, he focused on developing the country’s music industry. Shyne’s time in Jerusalem from 2010 to 2012 deepened his Orthodox Jewish faith, influencing his music and public persona.

Shyne entered politics in 2018, winning the Mesopotamia seat in the Belize House of Representatives in 2020 with 53% of the vote, following in the footsteps of his father and uncle, Michael Finnegan. He served as Leader of the Opposition from June to September 2021 and February 2022 to March 2025, advocating for stronger judicial systems, higher police salaries, and low-interest student loans.

His political rise was meteoric but controversial, with critics citing nepotism. He lost re-election in 2025 to Lee Mark Chang, securing only 318 votes to Chang’s 601, and announced his resignation as UDP leader, marking a potential end to his political career.
