Her father, Richard Whitmer, served as the head of Michigan’s Department of Commerce and later as president of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. At the same time, her mother, Sherry Whitmer, was an assistant attorney general. She has two siblings, including her sister Liz Whitmer Gereghty. She attended Forest Hills Central High School and later earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from Michigan State University. She also obtained a Juris Doctor from the Michigan State University College of Law.

Career

Gretchen Whitmer began her political journey in 2000 when she was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives. She served there until 2006 and then moved on to the Michigan Senate, where she served from 2006 to 2015.

During her tenure in the Senate, she served as the Democratic Leader from 2011 to 2015. In 2018, Whitmer ran for Governor of Michigan and won with strong statewide support, officially taking office in January 2019. She was re-elected in 2022.
