Robertino Aguinaga was born on 24 October 1982, in Jakarta, Indonesia, as the only child of a Spanish father, Roberto Candelas Aguinaga, and a Chinese-Indonesian mother, Ie Siu Khiauw (Siti Emi). His father left when he was young, and he was raised strictly by his mother and extended family.
During his early teenage years, he ran away from home and lived at the Jakarta Arts Institute (IKJ) complex, where he befriended students and eventually entered the entertainment industry. He converted to Islam at approximately age 13.
Career
Abimana Aryasatya began his entertainment career in 1997 as a stand-in and film crew member before making his acting debut in 1999 as Nuno in the popular television series Lupus Millenia under the name Robertino. He made his big-screen debut in 2005 with Missing and 12:00 AM. In 2006, he withdrew from the entertainment industry, moving to Semarang with his wife to start a culinary business, citing disillusionment with the industry’s backstage politics.
After a five-year hiatus, Abimana made his comeback in 2011 with the film Catatan (Harian) Si Boy, a role that marked his breakthrough and led him to change his name to Abimana Aryasatya. He received his first Indonesian Movie Award nomination for this performance. In 2012, he starred in Shackled (Belenggu), earning a Citra Award nomination for Best Leading Actor at the Indonesian Film Festival. His popularity skyrocketed with the 2013 blockbuster 99 Cahaya di Langit Eropa, adapted from a best-selling novel, which received praise from the President of Indonesia.
Major achievements followed with leading roles in Haji Backpacker (2014), earning his second Citra Award nomination, and the 2016 comedy Warkop DKI Reborn: Jangkrik Boss!
