Alan Alda was born on January 28, 1936, in New York City. His birth name was Alphonso Joseph D’Abruzzo. He was the son of Robert Alda, an Italian-American actor and singer, and Joan Browne, a former showgirl and beauty-pageant winner.
His parents worked in entertainment, and his upbringing exposed him to theatre and performance from an early age.
Alda attended Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, New York, before studying English at Fordham University. He graduated in 1956.
While at Fordham, he became active in student theatre and developed the performing skills that eventually led him toward a professional acting career.

Alan Alda began performing professionally in theatre during the 1950s and made his Broadway debut in Only in America in 1959. He continued appearing on Broadway in productions such as Purlie Victorious, The Owl and the Pussycat and The Apple Tree.

His defining breakthrough came in 1972 when he was cast as Captain Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce in MASH*. He remained on the series until its conclusion in 1983, becoming one of television’s most celebrated performers.
