Alexander Karim was born on May 26, 1976, in Uppsala, Sweden, to a family of Ugandan refugees who arrived in Sweden in 1975. He was raised by his parents, Zarina Musa and Mr Karim, while his brothers are filmmakers Othman Karim and Baker Karim.
His family later settled in Helsingborg, where he grew up. After high school, he moved to Los Angeles and studied acting at the Los Angeles Theatre Academy, later joining The Hudson Theatre. He returned to Sweden in 2000 to begin his film career.
