Amit Tandon was born on 11 April 1979 in New York City, United States, to father Ashok Tandon and mother, a homemaker whose name is not publicly known.
He has a brother named Sumit Tandon and a younger sister named Rena Jolly.
Tandon was raised in New York, where he attended North Rockland High School in Thiells and Nanuet Senior High School in Nanuet.
He completed his early university education at Stony Brook University in New York before relocating permanently to Mumbai, India, after reaching the finals of Indian Idol 1 in late 2004.

Following his departure from the show, he contributed vocals to the Indian Idol 1 album as well as a compilation album titled Yaaron, featuring other finalists from the season.

Amit Tandon married Dr. Ruby Tandon, a dermatologist based in Mumbai, in 2007 after meeting on an online social networking platform.
The couple has a daughter named Jiyana Tandon.
In 2017, Tandon and his wife separated, with Tandon later publicly admitting in a November 2024 interview that he had been unfaithful multiple times during the marriage and that his infidelity caused irreparable damage to the relationship.
