Andrew Lau was born on April 4, 1960, in Hong Kong. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lau, and grew up as one of six children in Yuen Long. His younger brother Lau Wai Man became a designer, while the other four siblings are not publicly named.
Andrew Lau is of Han Chinese ethnicity and was raised as a Catholic, attending church regularly and learning guitar there. He studied at St. Joan of Arc Secondary School and later Lingnan Secondary School, graduating from secondary school in 1980.
Career
Andrew Lau began his professional career in 1981 after joining Shaw Brothers as a camera assistant. His first film assignment came on Legendary Weapons of China, where he worked as a junior member of the cinematography team. He gradually advanced to cinematographer and received his first major cinematography credit on Mr. Vampire.
In 2002, Lau and Alan Mak directed Infernal Affairs, a crime thriller that became a major Hong Kong success and later inspired Martin Scorsese’s The Departed. Lau and Mak subsequently completed the Infernal Affairs trilogy and collaborated on Initial D and Confession of Pain.
His later credits include The Flock, Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen, The Captain, The Chinese Doctor, The Battle at Lake Changjin, and The Dumpling Queen. He has also continued producing and cinematography work.
