Athar ul-Haque Malik was born on November 13, 1952, in Bahawalpur, Pakistan, to his parents Mazhar ul-Haque Malik, an ophthalmic surgeon, and Zaibunisa Malik. His family immigrated to England in 1956 when he was three years old after his father secured a position at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.

He grew up in London and attended Bec Grammar School in Tooting from age eleven. He later trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Although from a Muslim background, he describes himself as not a practising Muslim. His ethnicity is Pakistani. His religion is Islam.

Career

Art Malik began his professional path in 1978 with stage work and early television appearances. He appeared in major films including A Passage to India (1984), The Living Daylights (1987) as Kamran Shah, True Lies (1994) as terrorist Salim Abu Aziz, and The Wolfman (2010).

On television he played recurring roles as Zubin Khan in Holby City (2003–2005), Francesc Gacet in Borgia (2011–2014), and Bunny Latif in Homeland (2014–2020). Additional credits include Upstairs Downstairs, Messiah, Ben Hur (2010), The Nativity (2010), and Doctor Who.
