He grew up with seven siblings in a challenging environment. As a teenager, he turned to street crime and at age 17 was convicted of armed robbery, serving 56 months in prison.

While incarcerated, he discovered boxing, earned his General Equivalency Degree, converted to Islam, and turned his life around. Upon release in 1988 on parole, he maintained a clean record and began his professional boxing career.

Career

Bernard Hopkins began his professional boxing career on October 11, 1988, after losing his debut but then winning 22 consecutive fights. He captured the vacant IBF middleweight title in 1995 by knocking out Segundo Mercado.

Known for his defensive mastery, discipline, and longevity, he defended the IBF title a record 20 times.

In 2001, he unified the middleweight division by defeating Keith Holmes and Félix Trinidad, becoming the undisputed champion and earning Fighter of the Year honors. He broke Carlos Monzón’s record with his defenses and later moved up to light heavyweight, where he became the oldest world champion in history at age 46 by defeating Jean Pascal in 2011 for the WBC title.

He further claimed the IBF light heavyweight title at age 48 and the WBA title at age 49, unifying belts in the process. Hopkins retired in 2016 after 67 fights with a record of 55 wins (32 by KO), 8 losses, and 2 draws.

Post-retirement, he became a promoter with Golden Boy Promotions and appeared in films. His career is defined by resilience, turning from prison to unifying world titles and setting age records.
