Early life and education
Bruce McCulloch was born on May 12, 1961, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He grew up in Alberta and attended Strathcona Composite High School in Edmonton before moving to Calgary, where he attended Dr. E.P. Scarlett High School.
McCulloch studied journalism and public relations at Mount Royal University, then became involved in sketch comedy at TheatreSports and the Loose Moose Theatre Company.
It was at Loose Moose that he met Mark McKinney, beginning a creative partnership that eventually led to The Kids in the Hall.
Career
Bruce McCulloch began performing professionally in the 1980s and became one of the central members of The Kids in the Hall alongside Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson.
The troupe’s television series ran from 1989 to 1995 and established McCulloch as a distinctive comedian, writer and performer. He also appeared in the group’s feature film Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy in 1996.
McCulloch later expanded into directing, writing and producing. He directed Dog Park, Superstar, Stealing Harvard and Comeback Season, while also creating the ABC sitcom Carpoolers.
His television acting credits include Saturday Night Live, Gilmore Girls, Arrested Development, Comedy Bang! Bang!, Workaholics, Young Drunk Punk and Children Ruin Everything.
He returned to The Kids in the Hall for the 2022 revival and has continued directing and producing comedy projects, including TallBoyz.
