Early Life and Education

Claes Kasper Bang (58 years old) was born on 28 April 1967 in Odense on the Danish island of Funen. His parents Mimi Bang and Bjarne Bang divorced during his childhood, and he mostly lived with his father and moved homes several times.

In high school he participated in a production of the musical Hair which marked the beginning of his interest in acting.

At age 23 he applied to the Danish National School of Theatre (Statens Teaterskole) but was not accepted; he reapplied the next year and was admitted five days before his 25th birthday. He attended from 1992 to 1996.

After graduating he made his stage debut and worked extensively in Danish theatre before moving into film and television.

Personal Life

Claes Bang married stylist and photographer Lis Louis-Jensen on 25 September 2010, in a ceremony held on a canal boat in Copenhagen. He is step-father to her two daughters, Sarah and Bella. The family has lived in Frederiksberg (Copenhagen) since about 2008.

Career

After completing his theatre education, Bang began working on stage and in Danish television. His early screen roles included parts in Danish series such as Taxa (1997-1999) and several German-language productions in Germany and Austria.

His major international breakthrough came when he starred as Christian, a museum curator, in Ruben Östlund’s film The Square (2017), which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

For his performance, Bang became the first Dane to win the European Film Award for Best Actor. He followed with roles in major productions including The Affair (2019), where he played Sasha Mann; the BBC/Netflix mini-series Dracula (2020) as Count Dracula; and the Viking epic The Northman (2022) playing Fjölnir.
