Early Life and Education
Dimitrij Schaad entered the world on 17 September 1985 in Kaskelen, in what was then the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic, to parents referred to as Mr. and Mrs. Schaad. He spent his first eight years near Almaty before the family moved to Germany in 1993.
He has a brother, the director Alex Schaad. Schaad attended Gymnasium Mengen in Baden-Württemberg, graduating in 2005. He then studied acting at the Bayerische Theaterakademie August Everding in Munich from 2005 to 2009 and spent time at the Russian State Institute of Performing Arts (State Institute for the Performing Arts) in Saint Petersburg. He is of German origin with roots in Kazakhstan, and his religion is Christianity.
Career
Dimitrij Schaad began his professional stage career with an engagement at Schauspiel Essen in 2009, then joined the ensemble at Schauspielhaus Bochum from 2010 to 2013.
In 2013 he became a core member of the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin under Shermin Langhoff and Jens Hillje, where he frequently performed self-written monologues and collaborated with directors including Yael Ronen and Sebastian Nübling. For the 2013/14 season he was named Young Actor of the Year in the Theater heute critics’ poll.
He has remained active in theater, including the solo piece The Silence at the Schaubühne (directed by Falk Richter), which earned major critical recognition. Parallel to stage work he began writing, co-authoring plays and short films with his brother Alex that won a Student Academy Award (Gold) and Max Ophüls prizes.
Schaad shifted greater focus toward screen work around 2019–2020. He took the lead role of Marc-Uwe in the film adaptation of Die Känguru-Chroniken (The Kangaroo Chronicles, 2020) and its sequel Die Känguru-Verschwörung (2022). He gained wider international visibility as Sven Petzold in the Netflix series Kleo (2022–2024) opposite Jella Haase.
In 2022 he co-wrote and starred in Aus meiner Haut (Skin Deep), directed by his brother, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival and received the Queer Lion. Additional credits include roles in Killing Eve, Das Boot, Sophia, der Tod und ich, and the Netflix series Kacken an der Havel, which he co-created.
He has been a member of the Deutsche Filmakademie since 2022 and continues to balance film, television, and theater while teaching as a freelance lecturer at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts.
