Dylan Moran was born on 3 November 1971 in Navan, County Meath, Ireland, to parents referred to as Mr. and Mrs. Moran. His father worked as a carpenter and his mother was named Lynda. He is an only child.

Moran attended St Patrick’s Classical School, where he began experimenting with comedy, and left school at the age of 16. He spent several years unemployed before discovering stand-up. He is of Irish origin, and his religion is Christianity.

His major television breakthrough came with Black Books (2000–2004), which he co-created and co-wrote. Moran starred as Bernard Black, the chaotic, wine-loving owner of a second-hand bookshop, opposite Bill Bailey and Tamsin Greig. The series won two BAFTA awards for Best Situation Comedy. He also appeared in the sitcom How Do You Want Me? and had a memorable cameo in the film Notting Hill (1999).

On the big screen, Moran played supporting roles in Shaun of the Dead (2004) and Run Fatboy Run (2007). He has continued to focus primarily on live stand-up, releasing specials such as Monster and undertaking extensive international tours.
