Fred Nii Amugi was born on November 5, 1948, in Teshie, Accra, Ghana. He was brought up by his parents Mr. Amugi and Comfort Naa Momo Amugi (his mother, who lived to 100 years old) in a family that moved around due to his father’s job with the Ghana Housing Corporation.

He grew up with one full sibling (deceased) and other siblings in areas such as Osu and estates in Accra during the late 1950s and 1960s. He attended Broaks Basic and Junior High School, then Takoradi Senior High School and Nungua Senior High School.

During his final year at Nungua, literature master Nick Teye spotted his talent and gave him his first stage role, sparking his acting passion. He later joined the civil service, serving 33 years and rising to acting director of Supply in Ghana’s Ministry of Finance. His ethnicity is Ghanaian. His religion is Christianity.

Fred Amugi began his acting journey in the 1970s through theatre and stage performances after being discovered at school.
