Jake Wood was born on 12 July 1972 in Westminster, London, to an English father, a French mother named Joelle.
He grew up in the capital, attended City of London Academy Highbury Grove. Siblings are not publicly known.
He trained as an actor at the Anna Scher Drama School in Islington, North London, beginning his formal studies there as a child. He is of British-French origin, his religion is Christianity.

Jake Wood made his acting debut in 1984 in the television series The Gentle Touch.
