Throughout his childhood, James was fortunate to have two siblings, Barbara Caan and Ronnie Caan. In pursuit of education, he attended Rhodes Preparatory School before ultimately graduating from Michigan State University.


In 1963, Caan started acting by taking on a small role in “Irma la Douce.” He gradually gained recognition for his supporting performances in movies like “Red Line 7000” (1965), “El Dorado” (1966), and “The Rain People” (1969). 

However, it was in 1971 that Caan truly made his mark with his portrayal of Brian Piccolo, a football player battling cancer, in the TV movie “Brian’s Song.” This breakthrough role earned him an Emmy Award nomination and established him as a prominent dramatic actor.

Caan married fellow actress Dee Jay Mathis for the first time in 1961. Tara Caan, the couple’s only child, was born in 1964. Their marriage lasted five years before ending in divorce in 1966. In 1976, Caan married Sheila Marie Ryan, a former Playboy model who had dated Elvis Presley.

 Their marriage was brief, lasting only a year.
