James Waterston was born on January 17, 1969, in New York City to actor Sam Waterston and Barbara Rutledge Johns.
He has three half-siblings from his father’s later marriage: filmmaker Graham Waterston and actresses Elisabeth Waterston and Katherine Waterston.
He grew up in New York City and studied at Yale University, where he earned a degree in English with a theatre minor and was a member of the a cappella group The Society of Orpheus and Bacchus.
