His father, John Joseph Kokken, worked as a professor and later served as a college vice-principal, while his mother, Thressiamma John Kokken, was a nursing matron who spent much of her career working in the Middle East.

He grew up alongside his two brothers, Lewis John Kokken and Anderson John Kokken.
