Early Life and Education

John Pollono was born on 23 May 1972 in Syosset, New York, to parents John Pollono Sr., a first-generation Italian-American, and Michele B. Pollono. He has three sisters and was raised in a working-class Italian-American family in Londonderry, New Hampshire.

He graduated from Londonderry High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1994. He also studied film at New York University and later trained in acting at the Howard Fine Studio in Los Angeles. He is of Italian-American origin and his religion is Christianity.

Career

John Pollono moved to Los Angeles around 2000 to pursue screenwriting and acting. He co-founded the Jabberwocky Theatre Company in 2004, which evolved into Rogue Machine Theatre, where he became a playwright-in-residence. Early plays included Lost and Found and one-acts that built his reputation in the Los Angeles theater community.

His breakthrough came with Small Engine Repair in 2011, a dark comedy he wrote and starred in as Frank. The production won multiple awards, including the LA Ovation Award for Best Play and Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards, and transferred Off-Broadway to MCC Theater in 2013.
