Kim Bodnia, now aged 60, was born on 12 April 1965 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He grew up in the town of Espergærde and comes from a Jewish family with Polish and Russian ancestry. In a 2014 statement he described himself as “half‐Russian, half‐Polish and all Jewish.”
Before turning to acting, Bodnia was a successful youth athlete in the 100 metres and long jump, becoming the Zealand youth champion.
A foot injury prevented him from pursuing football as a goalkeeper, and the shift led him toward theatre. He applied to the Danish National School of Theatre and Contemporary Dance (Statens Teaterskole) and gained admission in 1987 after a failed first attempt, graduating around 1991.
