Harikrishna Giri Goswami was born on 24 July 1937 in Abbottabad, now in Pakistan. His parents were H.L. Goswami and Krishna Kumari Goswami. Manoj Kumar began acting in small roles in films such as Fashion (1957) and Kaanch Ki Gudiya (1960). His breakthrough came with Hariyali Aur Rasta (1962), but it was Woh Kaun Thi? (1964) that made him a star.

Frustrated by foreign influences in Indian society, he turned director with Upkar (1967), introducing the patriotic anthem “Mere Desh Ki Dharti.” The film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, and his performance earned him a Filmfare Best Actor award.

He followed with Purab Aur Pachhim (1970), Shor (1972), and the multi-starrer Kranti (1981), one of the biggest hits of its time. His collaborations with composers Kalyanji-Anandji produced timeless patriotic songs.
