Harikrishna Giri Goswami was born on 24 July 1937 in Abbottabad, now in Pakistan. His parents were H.L. Goswami and Krishna Kumari Goswami. Frustrated by foreign influences in Indian society, he turned director with Upkar (1967), introducing the patriotic anthem “Mere Desh Ki Dharti.” The film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, and his performance earned him a Filmfare Best Actor award.
He followed with Purab Aur Pachhim (1970), Shor (1972), and the multi-starrer Kranti (1981), one of the biggest hits of its time. His collaborations with composers Kalyanji-Anandji produced timeless patriotic songs.
Though his output slowed in the 1990s, his legacy as the pioneer of nationalist Hindi cinema remained unchallenged. Manoj Kumar received the Padma Shri in 1992 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015, cementing his status as a cinematic legend.
