Phifer then joined the cast of ER as Dr. Gregory Pratt in 2002, and remained on the show until 2008. His character died in a cliffhanger involving an ambulance explosion. He also appeared in The Tuskegee Airmen, Subway Stories, and Brian’s Song, and gained attention for his role in Carmen: A Hip Hopera opposite Beyoncé Knowles.

In addition to his television work, Phifer had roles in Homicide: Life on the Street and New York Undercover, and earned an NAACP Image Award nomination for A Lesson Before Dying. He also had a guest-starring role on Lie to Me in 2009.
