Career
Humphreys began his acting career at age eight when he attended an open casting call in Memphis, Tennessee, for a "young Tom Hanks with light eyes and a quirky disposition”.
The casting team was particularly taken with his thick Southern accent, selecting him to play young Forrest Gump in the 1994 film. As part of his preparation, Tom Hanks worked to emulate Humphreys’s speech and mannerisms for the adult Forrest Gump character.
Following Forrest Gump, Humphreys received a nomination at the 16th Youth in Film Awards. However, apart from high school productions and an uncredited role in the 2003 television adaptation of John Grisham’s A Painted House, he did not pursue acting further during his youth.
Instead, he enlisted in the United States Army in November 2004, serving as an infantry soldier for four years, which included an 18-month deployment in Anbar Province, Iraq. He completed his military service on June 4, 2008.
After his military service, Humphreys returned to acting with a role as Eddie in the 2011 independent World War II film Pathfinders: In the Company of Strangers.
In more recent years, he has appeared in documentary projects, including the 2021 Netflix series The Movies That Made Us, and participated in the 2024 television special 30 Years of Forrest Gump. He has also expressed interest in returning to the film industry through continued acting training.
